Problem

To make changes on the NHL website, generating and uploading game ticket links for home and away games, adding, editing, or removing players featured on the Player Spotlight page, and managing site details like a team's calendar link, designated NHL employees relied on a tool called Legacy CMS. Legacy CMS supported a few different permission levels: NHL Admin, League Admin, and Club Admin, each with its own set of what a user could actually view and control. But the tool itself had gone significantly outdated, and stakeholders were ready for something better.

Design Goal

FreshIce is the new database built to replace Legacy CMS, designed to give stakeholders a more seamless, updated experience for editing information on NHL.com and the related app data, without losing any of the permission structure that made Legacy CMS work for different roles across the league and its clubs in the first place.

The design and development team moved to weekly sprints, working toward an initial release targeted before the start of Playoff season.
